The Functions of Gambling in Society

Gambling is believed to have originated during the early civilizations. Artifacts discovered by archaeologists show that gambling is one of the leisure activities of ancient people in Rome and in Persia.

As time passes by, gambling became prevalent in the society. It is now considered as one way of entertainment and one for of relaxation of people. Due to the prevalence of gambling in communities some local and national authorities decided to legalize establishments that offer gambling games.

Casinos are legalized establishments that provide people worthwhile and unique experiences of gambling. Casinos offer different gambling games such as poker, blackjack, backgammon, roulette and slots. These establishments are proven to attract locales and even tourists. Most people visit casinos for the hope that they will increase their money or other possessions.

Sociologist Emile Durkheim conceptualized the theory of structural functionalism. The theory suggests that everything in the society has its purpose and is important to the stability of a community. Everything, whether material or immaterial, has functions in the society.

In this regard, it can be argued that casinos also have functions and play a significant role in the improvements in the societal structure. Even if they are perceived to be harmful to people, casinos are still important to the members of the society.

The birth of casinos led to the opening of employment opportunities for all classes of people. Casinos open job vacancies to people who deserved to be employed even if they do not attain a high-level of education. Casinos also offer better benefits to their employees.

In addition, casinos contribute to economic development. Casinos are commonly visited by tourists who in turn contribute to the improvement of public revenues. The increase in public revenues meant the implementation of government projects that are helpful to locale people.

These facts showed how valuable casinos are in the society. Even if they were perceived negatively by most people, it is important to know that casinos are important to attain economic stability as well as to enhance employment opportunities available in a particular community, town or state. As Durkheim said, everything has function, thus, casinos play a significant role to enhance the quality of life of the members of the society.
